Tuesday January 29, 2002 Bergkamp ready to appeal against red card from icons.com "I'm still very shocked about the red card I received against Liverpool on Sunday. It was never my intention to hurt Jamie Carragher and I didn't make any contact with him at all. So why the red card? I can see it looked a little reckless but as I say, I never touched him. I think it's extremely strange, then, that I got sent off. "Perhaps because I'm seen as a creative, rather than a tackling player, the challenge came across worse than it would have done if a centre-back or a tough tackling midfielder had committed it. Indeed, there was one challenge in particular that happened after I was sent off that I feel definitely should have warranted a red card. "I'm not very experienced about what happens at times like this and I'm not sure what the club will do, but I think there is a case for us to appeal. I hark back to what I said before: I never touched the player. Therefore, there is a reason to challenge the card. Some have asked whether I would have accepted a yellow card in the circumstances. No, I wouldn't have. As I keep stressing, I never touched the player so there was nothing to punish me for. "After I saw red, I went up the tunnel and into the dressing-room. I'd forgotten in the excitement that Martin Keown had already been dismissed and as I arrived in the dressing room, he was watching the replay of my challenge on Carragher. He said: "Dennis! You never touched him! How could they send you off? How is it possible for them to send you off for that?!" He got quite worked up, actually. "After the game, I felt very emotional. I was delighted that we'd knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup with me scoring the winner. All the same, I felt down about the red card. I feel there must be a better way to have dealt with the Carragher challenge than sending me off. "Still, I scored the winner and we're through to the next round in which we've received a good draw. I also got that winner from a header which is pretty rare for me. I must try and look on the bright side!" |
