Dennis on the cusp of his century
from arsenal.com

Dennis Bergkamp should soon have 100 reasons to celebrate his excellent season - if he can just score a few more goals. Well, four to be precise.

Our original Dutch Master has scored 96 goals for the club since signing from Inter Milan almost seven years ago. He has also, of course, selflessly laid on so many other goals for his Highbury team-mates.

He has hit 13 so far this season and that despite not playing in such a prominent attacking role. For he explains how he has had to adapt his game playing alongside a striker such as Thierry Henry, whose pace and finishing skills make him the natural goalscorer in the squad.

For Bergkamp gets almost as much pleasure in his creative role as he does lashing the ball into the back of the net.

He said: "I've always been used to dropping into deep positions to pick up the ball, so I can play this playmaker role.

"When you have a guy like Thierry Henry, he's the finisher with his superb pace. I can do that as well, but he's got it even more so it is natural that I should play a slightly different role.

"But to play well you have to have a formation and know what everyone is doing."

Bergkamp seems to be able to pass to team-mates without even looking sometimes, but he admits that what looks planned from the stands is not necessarily what is taking place on the pitch.

Take the Easter Monday goal against Charlton, for example, when Bergkamp set up Freddie Ljungberg with an easy finish.

"We've had some luck in the past few games, but maybe that's what we deserve because we have been so concentrated and focussed on the games," he added.

"For example, I was trying to shoot into the open goal against Charlton, but instead it went to Freddie who put it in!"

And he will not put his 100-goal target ahead of the team's success in the closing stages of the season.

"The important thing was to get the three points and I'm very happy when that happens," Bergkamp said. "That's the aim now for us in each game until the end of the season."
