Monday October 28, 2002 Bergkamp faces trial by video from soccernet.com Dennis is facing the possibility of trial by television. He was seen to commit offence away from the eyes of the referee against Blackburn on Saturday, and the FA disciplinary committee could now act. Arsenal striker Bergkamp appeared to stamp on Blackburn's Nils-Eric Johansson after the pair went in for a challenge at Highbury on Saturday. FA bosses will assess referee Graham Barber's verdict on the stamping row before deciding whether he faces trial by video. An FA spokesman said: 'We haven't received the referee's report yet, which will confirm if he didn't see the incident. The referee is the authority on the field of play, so we will look at the report and decide what further action, if any, is needed.' If the FA decide Bergkamp's stamp does merit trial by video, the Dutchman would face the prospect of a three-match ban for violent conduct. He escaped punishment at the time, and the FA's video panel is therefore free to look at the incidents again with a view to disciplinary action if they so choose. Such a development would be unwelcome for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose lynchpin midfielder and captain Patrick Vieira was last week banned for two matches by the FA. |
