Sunday January 5, 2003 Wenger lauds ton-up Dennis from soccernet.com Arsene Wenger hailed Dennis Bergkamp's 'immense contribution' to Arsenal after the striker scored his 100th goal for the club as the FA Cup holders eased past Oxford into the fourth round. Wenger declared: 'Dennis has made an immense contribution to the club, not only as a great player but also as a great example and he's shown that again. 'I can't believe how quickly he has scored his 100 goals as all of his goals have been sensational. The fact that he's scored his 100th goal in this game shows just how professional he is. He doesn't just save his goals for the bigger games. 'I think this will be his last club, although he still has to decide on his future.' Bergkamp, whose contract runs out this summer, later revealed he is likely to seek an extension to his career at Highbury. The Dutchman declared: 'I expect this to be my last club but, the way I feel at the moment, I still want to carry on playing. I know that I'm going to have to make a decision soon about my future, but hopefully we can sit down and sort something out. 'The enjoyment of scoring never goes. I still get the same buzz, the same excitement, whether it's my first or my 100th goal.' Bergkamp added: 'It was a very special moment for me to score my 100th goal for Arsenal, it was historical for both me and the club. 'It doesn't matter who the goal came against, it's 100 goals in all competitions and it's a very proud moment for me in my career. 'I've got a shirt and the match-ball signed by the team and, when I get time, I will frame them and put them up in my house.' |
