Monday April 19, 2004 Bergkamp positive of Gunners stay from skysports.com Dennis Bergkamp is positive of winning a new deal with Arsenal, but stressed he has not yet discussed the finer details of a contract with the Highbury paymasters. The Dutch maestro will be out of contract in the summer and has attracted admiring glances from Ajax, but Bergkamp has made no secret of his desire to stay with Arsenal. The 34-year-old has hinted that Gunners chief Arsene Wenger wants to keep him at Highbury, provided a deal that suits both parties can be agreed. "I'd love to stay with Arsenal," the Dutchman told The Guardian. "We had a good talk a few weeks ago, the boss and I. "I told him I would like to carry on for one more year and he said we were on the same wavelength. That was very good to hear. "We haven't talked about money yet. People can say the money doesn't really matter but it does show you how much a club respects you. "You can always show respect to a player in another way - by opening negotiations for a new contract. "So I took it as a very positive sign that the club came to me rather than the other way round. "We will see what they have to offer. But I'm sure I will stay unless something dramatic happens on their side." |
